Andrzej Skorut
Andrzej Skorut was born in Poland and made Utah his home in 1987. Starting painting in Krakow, by age six he devoted several hours a day at a painting club and later joined a prestigious high school for developing artists. He left Poland at 17 to join his father, who earlier had fled oppression in Poland and settled in Utah. His mother and sisters followed later. “The United States gives you a great opportunity,” he says. “I’ve achieved more here than I could have in Poland. There, it was hard even to get decent brushes.”
Skorut graduated from the University of Utah with a BFA in 1995 and success found him almost immediately, a fact that surprised him as much as anyone.
Andrzej Skorut credits a unique source with inspiring the subtle undertone of mystery in his fine art: “When I saw Rembrandt’s works at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I found a personal connection to the master. I now rub layers of paint across the surface with a stiff rag, then wipe it off in swaths to reveal the light. It’s like looking through sunglasses for a different tint.” The unusual approach results in oil paintings that exude lyricism and serenity.
