Artist David Jonason combines his love of architecture, landscape and design with a keen artistic talent to create evocative oil paintings that transcend the angles and shapes of his subject buildings, or of nature itself.
Jonason’s innovative style — which he describes as “Contemporary Cubism ” – employs slashes of light and color to emphasize the architectural design of an iconic building, while integrating elements of both Cubism and Realism into clean lines, strong forms, and bold uses of color.
Time and again, Jonason’s oil paintings have celebrated a diverse selection of architectural landmarks. But while his artistic style is to gently break up the space, Jonason ensures that these familiar buildings remain recognizable.
In his more recent work, Jonason turns his artistic eye to natural environments, most notably the familiar desert locales of the American Southwest. With these subjects, he depicts cloud and rock formations, canyons and buttes, with a dramatic interpretation that celebrates the grandeur of nature.
Jonason’s red rock vistas and “skyscapes” convey a powerful sense of the American spirit, of limitless possibility and boundless opportunity.
