Erin Hanson
Erin Hanson transforms desert landscape into an abstract mosaic of color and texture. Through application of thick impasto paint and bold, free strokes, the artist re-defines the beauty of the desert. A lifelong hiker and rock climber, Erin takes photographs in remote locations of the desert, as well as popular National and State Parks. Using quick, plen-air-type strokes, she creates large oil paintings in her studio based on the photos she takes.
Erin Hanson has been professionally painting fine and commercial art for many years. Always encouraged by a loving father and dedicated art teacher, she learned drawing, watercolors, acrylics and oils when she was 10 years old. As a child, Erin loved to paint the scenery around her, from pets to houses to birch trees. When Erin turned 13, she began working for Paintin’ Place, a collaboration of artists who created wall-sized murals for casinos and restaurants, including those in the Las Vegas Stratosphere.
Erin Hanson graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Bioengineering and later moved to Las Vegas to rock climb and paint the beautiful scenery of Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire State Park. Her affinity for rocks and desert landscape is quite apparent in her work. She is now pursuing her art near Joshua Tree National Park in California.
Artist Erin Hanson considers her oil paintings a blend of traditional California impressionism and abstract cubism, with a dash of “plen-air style.” The rocks themselves seem to dictate her painting style, sometimes bold and dark, other times softened by a fragile light. Erin Hanson transforms desert landscape into an abstract mosaic of color and texture. The impasto application of paint lends a sculptural effect to her art. These oil paintings are created wet-on-wet, without layering, allowing you to experience every brush stroke. A colorful underpainting gives a unique, glowing effect to her paintings.
