Matt Eveleigh
Words are gateways to communication, and for thousands of years mankind has felt the need to carve them into stone. This ancient craft still is a living tradition today – in the Pacific Northwest, where Matt lives.
Mr. Eveleigh follows the traditional practice of writing the calligraphy directly on the stone with pen or brush and then carving with hammer and chisel, by hand. This creates the distinctive ‘V-groove’ characteristic of hand-carved letters that catch the light so beautifully.
Matt embellishes his engraved letters with pigment or gold leaf. He also enhances natural fissures in the stone with gold leaf to dramatic effect.
For those wishing to learn more about this quintessentially English art I recommend the standard work on the subject, Writing and Illuminating and Lettering, by the “patron saint” of the art, Edward Johnston.
